On 9 March 1796 Napoleon Bonaparte (15 August 1769 - 5 May 1821) married his first wife Josephine de Beauharnais (23 June 1763 - 29 May 1814) in a civil ceremony. She was formerly known as 'Rose', but Napoleon didn't like the name and called her 'Josephine' instead. Josephine never produced an heir to Napoleon's throne, so he eventually divorced her to remarry in March 1810.
