Siege of Zara during the 4th Crusade

23 November 1202

The Siege of Zara (or Siege of Zadar, Croatian: Opsada Zadra) from November 10 to November 23 in 1202 was the first major action of the Fourth Crusade and the first attack against a Catholic city by Catholic crusaders, that sacked the Croation town. The Fourth Crusade (1202-1204) was originally intended to conquer Muslim-controlled Jerusalem. Instead, the Crusaders of Western Europe eventually invaded, conquered and sacked the Christian Eastern Orthodox city of Constantinople, also known as Byzanz or Istanbul.
